Statement from Mayor Donald Shaw on the Passing of NJ Senator Ronald Rice

“It is with a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of New Jersey Senator Ronald Rice, the longest-serving Black lawmaker in state history.

Senator Rice was a trailblazer when it came to improving social justice and led the way on important issues that impacted communities such as Roselle, including police reform and socioeconomic inequities.

He famously founded and chaired the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus for 18 years, paving the way for many black lawmakers across the state when he was first elected to serve Newark in 1981.

On behalf of the Borough Council, I wish to express sincere condolences to the friends and family of Senator Rice, along with all of the community members who were impacted by his service and compassion. He will be remembered as someone who was always willing to help his constituents and young leaders.”
